In the early 1980s, professional brain injury rehabilitation options beyond the hospital stay were very limited. Patients were discharged from the acute care setting into nursing homes or were sent home where families cared for them on their own. Without formal rehabilitation, many patients failed to return to purposeful and productive lives after their injury.

Rainbow's vision was to build comprehensive rehabilitation programs for individuals with brain injury or those suffering with dual diagnosis of brain and spinal cord injury. This program would provide a transitional placement for the patient between the hospital and home. It would be structured so that rehabilitation could take place in community-based, home-like environments that closely resembled real-world living and would be the source of numerous benefits for the patient and the family.

This vision became reality, and over the years has evolved into what is known today as Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers, Inc. From one residential home in 1983, Rainbow has grown to include five treatment centers, a NeuroRehab Campus®, two vocational centers and more than 35 community-based residential homes and apartments in southeast Michigan. Throughout its growth and change Rainbow's commitment to the patient has remained constant. This commitment continues to be the leading force that drives the success of our organization.
