Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers among those selected by
Veterans Health Administration to provide traumatic brain injury
rehabilitation services to veterans

LIVONIA, MI, June 7, 2011--The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has recently awarded contracts for a pilot program to provide long-term residential rehabilitation services for veterans with moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers is one of the contractors selected to provide these services. The contract allows services to only those who are VA-enrolled veterans receiving care in VHA medical center locations throughout the Polytrauma System of Care in the United States and its territories.

The program is part of the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act that directs Veterans Affairs (VA), in collaboration with the Department of Defense, to assess the effectiveness of providing Assisted Living services to eligible veterans with traumatic brain injury to enhance their rehabilitation, quality of life, and community integration.

“We are pleased to have been awarded this contract,” said Bill Buccalo, President of Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers.“We feel it is important work to help those who are returning from the wars in the Middle East or who have otherwise served our nation.”

Per the contract, Rainbow will provide veterans access to its vast continuum of care and expertise in several care level areas:

  • Neuro-Rehabilitation: designed to improve quality of life and return veterans to independence and, when practical, to the community, to work, and to school.
  • Neuro-Behavioral Rehabilitation: designed to focus on teaching behavioral alternatives to veterans with unsafe or maladaptive behaviors.
  • Supported Living and Ongoing Support: designed to assist veterans in living full and productive lives by enabling each participant the opportunity to preserve the goals reached in earlier stages of rehabilitation and to sustain quality of life.

The VA is now beginning the process of educating the selected companies on the process of admission once the veteran is discharged from a VA medical center. The pilot program is scheduled to run through June 2013.
