April is Occupational Therapy Month
YPSILANTI, Mich. April 13, 2009 —Sustaining a traumatic brain injury may rob a person of his or her independence, leaving the survivor reliant on others for bathing, dressing, feeding and other living necessities. Occupational therapy provides training brain injury survivors need to regain independence in daily living skills.
Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers, a brain injury rehabilitation center based in southeastern Michigan, is celebrating the work of occupational therapists (OTs) through Occupational Therapy Month, sponsored by the American Occupational Therapy Association.
Rainbow offers the full continuum of care in brain injury rehabilitation. Offering such therapies as: physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, mental heath, speech language pathology and vocational therapy, Rainbow provides the right care to brain injury survivors at the right time throughout the entire recovery process.
Depending on the age and impairments of the injured person, there are many different plans of treatment and therapies that may assist a person with recovery from a brain injury.
“Some people look at rehab as ‘rehab’, but OTs really focus on building skills and activities within a survivor’s range of abilities. It really makes you appreciate your own independence, such as being able to cook for yourself or do laundry,” explained Nicole Rondini, occupational therapist at Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers.
OTs help people of all ages and abilities live life to the fullest. OTs take a holistic approach to therapy, looking at a person’s psychological, emotional, and physical well-being while working toward recovery.
"There are so many different areas of occupational therapy that we work in, depending on the age of the client and personal needs. I posted fliers about Occupational Therapy Month around Rainbow because I really wanted to spread awareness of all of the different things we can do," Nicole said.
