Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers Celebrates National Nurses Week May 6-12
YPSILANTI, Mich. May 1, 2009 —Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers, a brain injury rehabilitation center based in southeastern Michigan, is celebrating the work of nurses through National Nurses Week. This event is sponsored by the American Nurses Association.
The work of America's 2.9 million registered nurses saves lives and maintains the health of millions of people. National Nurses Week is celebrated annually throughout the United States, beginning with Registered Nurses Recognition Day on May 6 and ending on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Nightingale is the founder of nursing as a modern profession. She began her training in 1850 at the Institute of St. Vincent de Paul in Alexandria, Egypt and served the wounded during the Crimean War.
The excellent care of highly trained nurses is critical to the recovery and rehabilitation of a patient suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). More than 1.4 million Americans incur a traumatic brain injury each year. Automobile accidents, falls, acts of violence and sports accidents are common causes for TBIs.
Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of long-term disability among children and young adults. As medical advancements continue to be made, more and more people can and will survive traumatic brain injuries and this is leading to a need for nurses skilled in trauma and rehabilitation.
During National Nurses Week, registered nurses are honored across the country through rallies, community health screenings, childhood immunization efforts, dinners, receptions, hospital events and more.
Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.
