‘The Farms at Rainbow’ will help to provide fresh food to Rainbow’s clients

LIVONIA, MI, June 9, 2011--Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers is pleased to announce a new vocational program that introduces gardens at its various residential homes that will provide fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables to the clients living in the homes, or for sale at local farmer’s markets. To commemorate the start of the program, Rainbow is hosting a ground-breaking ceremony on June 9, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the site of the garden located at 6312 Talladay, Milan, MI 48160.

The garden at the home in Milan is the first of several ‘farms’ to be developed by Rainbow in Washtenaw and Oakland Counties, thereby creating real-world work opportunities for Rainbow’s clients with brain and spinal cord injuries who will learn vocational skills including seeding, plant maintenance, harvesting and sales.

“The goal of vocational rehabilitation is to help individuals achieve employment that is consistent with their unique strengths, interests and abilities. Rainbow’s continuum offers a wide variety of opportunities. The farms will be an excellent addition to it,” explained Lynn Brouwers, director of Program Development at Rainbow. ”

While the primary objective is vocational opportunities for Rainbow clients, the undertaking is also an initiative in sustainable gardening. Ultimately, the gardens will be landscaped with field stone, arbors and beds of flowers, along with planned shade for protection from the sun during work breaks. The gardens will be divided by five foot hard grass paths that will be conducive to persons with mobility and accessibility challenges. Several varieties of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, carrots, squash, and onions are just a few of the foods being planted.
