Summer Fun! page

Created by pediatric rehabilitation specialists, our Summer Fun! programs are designed for children and teens with brain injuries who need structure and supervision when school is not in session.

We have two Summer Fun! locations:

This year's program runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., five days per week from June 21 to Aug. 27, 2010. For more information, download the Summer Fun! brochure. Specific program information is available on the Oakland County program and Genesee County program pages.

The programs offer four broad participant groups:

Elementary School Age - Our Summer Fun! elementary age group consists of children 7 - 11 years old. Occasionally, a younger child will join the group and then a dedicated staff member is provided for additional support. For young children, interactive activities make learning fun. Books and toys fill the needs of this age group. Hands-on crafts and working in groups reinforce the success of doing a project independently or with needed assistance.

Middle School Age - The Rainbow team understands the struggles this group has transitioning from children to teenagers. Rainbow provides a nurturing environment for our middle school kids. This group is still involved with play and craft activities with their peers, while being introduced to the values and behaviors of teens. They are also introduced to "work" as they participate in prevocational activities.

High School Age - Teens get involved in groups, projects and activities that center on their physical, emotional and cognitive well-being. Employment and work skills programs are a priority as many adolescents are experiencing their first jobs. Provided outings reflect age-appropriate interests.

Postsecondary Age (Young Adult) - The post-secondary group is composed of the young adults who have chosen to receive extended services through the public school system (In Michigan, young adults are eligible for these services through age 26). Older adolescents in the postsecondary group participate in activities that focus on independent living and vocational skills. Paid employment in a structured environment reinforces job skills and learning throughout the summer. This group has the opportunity to practice social interactions with peers and within the community.

Summer at Rainbow is a fun and educational experience for all age groups. It brings out the best in the kids who attend, and the adults who are a part of the program. It creates memories for years to come!
