Project Description

This March, Rainbow Rehabilitation Centers is teaming up with the Brain Injury Association of Michigan to sponsor special screenings of The Crash Reel in commemoration of Brain Injury Awareness Month. The screenings are taking place in Traverse City, Farmington and Ann Arbor. The screenings are free and open to the public.

Immediately following each screening, there will be a panel discussion on traumatic brain injury (TBI) featuring local professionals. The panel will be moderated by Tom Constand, President and CEO of The Brain Injury Association of Michigan.

This is the fourth year in a row that Rainbow has presented a relevant screening to highlight Brain Injury Awareness Month and the importance of proper diagnosis and prevention of traumatic brain injuries.

About the movie

In 2009, professional snowboarder Kevin Pearce was enjoying his most successful year on the international snowboarding circuit, winning events and challenging the dominance of childhood friend, Shaun White. It was this rivalry that saw the pair push one another to perform ever more dangerous tricks.

On December 31, while training for the 2010 Olympics in Park City, Utah, Pearce’s gold medal dreams were taken away when he sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). While Pearce is recovering from a TBI that has left him in a coma, Shaun goes on to win Gold. During his early recovery, all Kevin can think about is getting back on the slopes. Doctors warn him that even a small knock to the head could be enough to kill him. Still he insists he wants to return to the sport he loves.

The Crash Reel combines 20 years of stunning action footage with specially-shot verité footage and interviews as it follows Pearce during his recovery and exposes the irresistible but potentially fatal appeal of extreme sports.

Note: this film is unrated and contains some strong language and graphic scenes.
